Police kill 3 suspected robbers in Ogun

- From Peter Moses, Abeokuta

Three highway armed robbery suspects were killed during the weekend by operatives of the Ogun Police Command after a 30-minute gun duel at Fidiwo along the Lagos/ Ibadan expressway.

The command’s spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed this in a statement yesterday in Abeokuta.

Oyeyemi said the policemen at OwodeEgba Divisional Headquarters had received a distress call from a popular bush meat seller on the operation of the hoodlums in the area.

The Divisional Police Office (DPO) at OwodeEgba Division, Sheu Alao, was said to have led his anti-robbery team to the scene “where they engaged the hoodlums in gun duel which lasted for about 30 minutes.”

Oyeyemi said at the end of the encounter, three members of the syndicate were gunned down; while others “escaped into the nearby bush with gunshot wound.”

Some of the items recovered, according to him, are one locally made single barrel gun, one shot double barrel gun, one single barrel muzzle loading gun, one live cartridge, a wrist watch belonging to the victim of the attack and cash sum of N10,220.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, who praised his men “for their gallantry and quick response to distress call” has ordered for “serious manhunt” for the fleeing members of the gang.

The commissioner appealed to hospitals, traditional healers and other health officials to report to the police, if anybody with gunshot injuries was seen around their area.
