Police arrest 10 suspects over cattle rustling, rape

The police in Gombe State have arrested 10 suspects for various crimes including cattle rustling and rape in the state.

Parading the suspects before newsmen, the Commission­er of Police, Mr Shina Tairu Olukolu, said the trio of Hassan Yakubu, 57, Salisu Garba, 36 and Shuaibu Mohammed, 27, all of Hayin Dogo, Hayin Misau and Tabra residentia­l areas of Gombe metropolis, were apprehende­d over alleged cattle rustling.He said they were found in possession of cows, sheep and rams concealed in a tinted vehicle.

The police said all the accused confessed to having stolen the animals from Dadin Kowa town of Yamaltu Deba LGA, in collaborat­ion with one Alhaji Musa and Alhaji Buba Ali also of Dadin Kowa who were still at large.

In another developmen­t, the police said they have arrested one Ya’u Abubakar, 40, of Kagarawal residentia­l area for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl after promising to give her N1000. Another suspected rapist, one Mohammed Malam Bako, was also arrested over rape of a 7-year-old girl.

“Also, on September 11, the police at Pero-Chonge Division arrested one Fatsuma Gidado, 60’ Ayuba John, 28’ Christophe­r Elkanah, 28 and Ishaku Manus, 23, all of Damjikiri village of Shomgom LGA over criminal conspiracy, causing hurt, trial by ordeal and attempt to commit culpable homicide,” Olukolu said.

He added that the suspects allegedly used brooms, machete and sticks to beat and inflict severe, life threatenin­g injuries on one Hannatu Thomas, 68, whom they accused of witchcraft and causing one Magaji Maxwell to fall ill after he ate a mango she gave him.

The police commission­er said all the suspects would be charged to court for prosecutio­n.
