But for me Fayose could have turned Ekiti course into maize farm – Bello

- By Tony Akhigbe [08056180071]

Ekiti Governor, Ayo Fayose, might not be your candidate if you want to attend a tea party with a priest. The man, they say is as tough as the ocean-forged brush. They say the Governor could afford to laugh once in a while. But the problem has to .do with the laughter. They say when the man laughs, his eyes do not. But they say when the man talks, his voice rises like that of a hysteric. The man could be a sorcerer. Why? He can see behind every screen. He can even see behind those screens behind the golf course. Give or take, Governor Ayo Fayose is not made for golf. There is no way a man with his make-up will love the game of golf. The man doesn’t have time for aesthetics. He eats his amala, even around garages where ‘area boys’ would be hailing... ‘yes oooo’. No wonder the man just woke up on the wrong side of his pillow one morning and ordered that the Ekiti Golf course built by the pioneer Military Administrator of the State, Colonel Bawa Muhammed be converted into a corn farm. Talk of an FCT Minister ordering that they should be planting cassava on those lush courses of the IBB International Golf Club and you could be close to the rough road Ayo Fayose was leading Ekiti golfers. But too good, one man, in his big wisdom was able to convince Fayose that a golf course could not be used as a corn farm. The man is former IBB Club Captain and indeed the Spirit behind Citec Villas in Abuja. And believe this, if you must, Fayose listened to the man IBB members prefer to call the ‘Big B’.

Bello said, “You see the Governor is not into the game of golf. But I knew I could make him play the game at the time but it did not happen. But I must say that the even though the Governor doesn’t play the game, he loves the game and the people who play it. The Governor is proud that we have a course in Ekiti... and why should he want to abolish it. But I must say here that a whole lot of politics is being mixed into the game. I mean those who were running the course when Governor, Niyi Adebayo, was ruling were sort of not trying to involve Fayose with happenings on the course. The thing got to a stage where the Fayose threatened to turn the course into a corn farm. It was at that stage I came into the picture. I looked out for the Governor and we talked. I told him about great resources golf could bring to any area if we want to consider those great people who are involved in the game. The governor listened to me. He asked us to go ahead. He even donated a bus to Ekiti Golf course. Look, this is what I used to preach... that dialogue could reap great fruits.
