No fewer than 16 tertiary institutions across the country will be participating in this year’s Joint Admissions and matriculation Board (JAMB) football competition.

The competition, which started last year, kicks off next week Monday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

Speaking yesterday in Ilorin during a press conference to herald the competition, the state Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development Muideen Alalade said that talents that would be discovered from the fiesta would form the nucleus of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), Nigerian Polytechnic Games Association (NIPOGA) and the West African University Games (WAPOGA).

He added that, “this is what the main organizing committee (MOC) and technical committee would look into.”

Alalade, who said cash prizes and medals and trophies would be given out to the first, second and third positions; explained that the participating institutions include five universities, five colleges of education, four polytechnics and two innovative enterprises institutions.

“The best team will receive N300,000, second N200,000 and third place N100,000,” he said.

Represented by Elder Ayoola Samuel, the commissioner said “All the 32 matches of this competition will be played at the University of Ilorin sports complex and the pitches of the Kwara state Football Academy from Monday October 1st to Saturday October 6th this year.

“The competition is classified as a grassroots sports development effort, and by this, institutions are expected to field bona fide students who have JAMB numbers and who are not or have not played for either a professional or national league side in Nigeria.

“JAMB and the inter-collegiate committee, comprising officials from NUGA, NIPOGA and NICEGA has provided the template for screening of players for this competition.”
