Centre wants more actions on corruption, insecurity

- By Abbas Jimoh

As Nigeria celebrates her 58 Independence anniversary, the Say No Campaign (SNC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for the braveness with which it is approaching the anticorruption efforts from the onset.

The SNC Convener, Ezenwa Nwagwu, said yesterday in Abuja that it is noteworthy that the Buhari’s administration declared zero tolerance to corruption and state its commitment to fight corruption decisively to the joy of the average Nigerians, who for decades, have bear the brunt of corruption.

“Through laudable and democratic policies and laws like the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Open Government Partnership, the Whistleblower policy, Freedom of Information Act, governance has been demystified and citizens are empowered to demand for accountability,” he said.

According to him, despite all these, the fight against corruption is far from being won, as many fear that it is losing momentum due to lack of appropriate sanction, disregard and non-compliant with the provisions of the laws and policies, months of unending investigations of high profile corruption cases, like that of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

“We implore the current leadership to go beyond restating its commitment to fight corruption but to publicly disassociate itself from corruption suspects and intensify its move to convict suspected frauds as well as deliver justice to the good people of Nigeria,” Nwagwu said.

He also urged Nigerians to reject corruption and show commitment to sanitize the society by naming and shaming corrupt officials and political leaders with questionable sources of wealth.
