Why we celebrated Independence Day elaborately - Presidency
The Presidency yesterday explained why this year’s Independence Day Anniversary was celebrated elaborately at the Eagle square, Abuja.
Daily Trust reports that the last time the event was celebrated elaborately was in 2010. Since then, it has been a low key event inside the Presidential Villa following Boko Haram insurgency.
This year’s 58th anniversary was celebrated at the Eagle square, Abuja with the venue filled to the capacity.
Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Malam Garba Shehu expressed happiness that the 58th Independence Day was celebrated successfully for the first time since 2010.
He told Daily Trust that the event turned out very well and was conducted professionally.
“This annual event at the nation’s capital was scaled down and confined to the precincts of the State House following an unfortunate bombing incident by terrorists eight years ago.
“The success of the event this year is due to the fact that the Boko Haram terrorists have been significantly weakened militarily by the current policy of the Buhari administration to effectively fund security, modernize and motivate members of our armed forces.
“The significant improvements in security have contributed greatly to the successful celebration of independence day in Abuja and areas that once under terrorist occupation.
“While the Presidency considers this year’s event a success, it is full of regrets that the cherished life of a fighter pilot was lost as the Air Force rehearsed for the events. A Board of Investigation has been ordered to find out the exact cause,” he said.
