FG committed to development of inland waterways, says NIWA MD

- From Itodo Daniel Sule, Lokoja

The new Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Senator Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora, has said the Federal Government is committed to developing inland waterways. Sen. Mamora said this would bring to the country a modern water transport mode that would complement the roads and railways in the transportation of goods and passengers.

Mamora who stated this in Lokoja on Wednesday shortly after assuming duty at NIWA’s headquarters, noted that an effective inland waterways transportation system would bring about sanity on the highways and help in reducing high death rates occasioned by road accidents.

He urged management and staff of the authority to rededicate effort towards actualising the vision and mission of the authority.

Mamora said attention would be given to the development of the human resource profile of the authority, with additional expertise and well trained workforce to enhance its operational efficiency.

He said the authority under his watch would equally focus on providing modern working equipment: machinery, boats, dredgers, buoys and navigation aids on the waterways.

He added NIWA would form strong collaboration and understanding with its sister agencies like the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and all other relevant maritime organisations and state governments for the purpose of alliance and synergy to develop the waterways. that a
