NLC pickets hotel over poor work conditions

- By Mustapha Suleiman

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday picketed the Bolton White Hotel over “precarious working condition of workers.”

NLC president Ayuba Wabba, who led the picketing, said the management of the hotel has not been treating its staff fairly.

The picketing was part of the activities to mark the 2018 World Day for Decent Work with the theme “Change the Rules.”

NLC members stormed the hotel at about 9am.

Wabba said workers in the hotel were being denied the rights of unionisation, long working hours, low wage, and sexual harassment, among others.

He also noted that Labour for the past ten years have made efforts to ensure that the management of the hotel comply with their demands but to no avail.

He urged the Ministry of Labour and Employment to ensure that the Inspectorate Department is resuscitated to ensure that workers do not work in such precarious conditions.

Speaking, President, National Union of Hotel and Personal Services Workers (NUHPSW) Mr Leke Success accused the hotel management of being notorious for treating its workers unfairly.

He, however, noted such issues were not only common in Bolton Hotel but also some others.

Also, Mrs Mercy Okezie, Women Leader, Women and Youth Commission of the NLC said “We also want to tell them we will stand by those that have been oppressed and sexually harassed.

“We also want to tell them that it was wrong for workers to work more than eight hours without off days. These things must stop.”
