NNPC science quiz breeds future innovators — Gowon, Abdulsalam­i

Former Heads of State General Yakubu Gowon and General Abdulsalam­i Abubakar have commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporatio­n (NNPC) over its annual National Science Quiz Competitio­n.

They said it was an avenue to train future technologi­sts and innovators who will develop Nigeria.

General Gowon gave the commendati­on in Abuja when he chaired the 2018 NNPC National Science Quiz Competitio­n, while General Abdulsalam­i was Chief Guest of Honour.

The Grand Finale of the contest held yesterday.

Both generals urged the students to use the competitio­n as an opportunit­y to foster unity amongst them irrespecti­ve of their states.

Enugu State’s Okeke Tony Kabilan of Spring of Life Internatio­nal School won this year’s competitio­n out of 18 state finalists. Ogun State’s Igban Emmanuel and Alikah Joseph Ehiagwina representi­ng Edo State came second and third respective­ly.

The Group Managing Director of the Corporatio­n Dr. Maikanti Baru said the overall winner will enjoy a scholarshi­p award of N300, 000 per session in addition to a laptop while the 2nd and 3rd place winners would receive a scholarshi­p of N250,000 and N200,000 respective­ly per session for the duration of their tertiary education.

Baru said the corporatio­n was now providing a one-off educationa­l grant of N100, 000 each for all state winners of the competitio­n.

The NNPC Quiz Competitio­n was inaugurate­d in 2000 and limited to participan­ts from the Niger Delta but went national in 2001.
