NNPC science quiz breeds future innovators — Gowon, Abdulsalami
Former Heads of State General Yakubu Gowon and General Abdulsalami Abubakar have commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over its annual National Science Quiz Competition.
They said it was an avenue to train future technologists and innovators who will develop Nigeria.
General Gowon gave the commendation in Abuja when he chaired the 2018 NNPC National Science Quiz Competition, while General Abdulsalami was Chief Guest of Honour.
The Grand Finale of the contest held yesterday.
Both generals urged the students to use the competition as an opportunity to foster unity amongst them irrespective of their states.
Enugu State’s Okeke Tony Kabilan of Spring of Life International School won this year’s competition out of 18 state finalists. Ogun State’s Igban Emmanuel and Alikah Joseph Ehiagwina representing Edo State came second and third respectively.
The Group Managing Director of the Corporation Dr. Maikanti Baru said the overall winner will enjoy a scholarship award of N300, 000 per session in addition to a laptop while the 2nd and 3rd place winners would receive a scholarship of N250,000 and N200,000 respectively per session for the duration of their tertiary education.
Baru said the corporation was now providing a one-off educational grant of N100, 000 each for all state winners of the competition.
The NNPC Quiz Competition was inaugurated in 2000 and limited to participants from the Niger Delta but went national in 2001.
