Missing General: Senate demands panel of inquiry
The Senate yesterday called on the Federal Government to immediately constitute an investigative panel of inquiry to probe the immediate and remote circumstances that led to the dumping of cars at a pond in Du District of Plateau State.
The Senate said the panel should also identify and interrogate possible suspects in the dastardly act and ensure that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.
Adopting a motion by Sen Mohammed Hassan (PDP, Yobe), the Senate said such action would serve as a deterrence to other criminallyminded persons.
While noting the disappearance of a retired Major General of the Nigerian Army, Idris Alkali, which led to the discovery of dumping of cars at the pond, the Senate condemned the act.
Members of the Red Chamber urged the security agencies to intensify efforts toward finding Major General Alkali and other missing Nigerians.
They urged all the surrounding communities in Du District to cooperate with the security agencies to uncover the crime.
In his motion, Sen Hassan said the way people are being attacked on the Jos road, commuters going to Northeastern states now prefer going through Kano, a longer route, than following Jos.
He said unless urgent action was taken, people would continue to be attacked on the road unabated, adding that so many people have fallen victims of the incessant attacks.
“Therefore, it’s important that the investigation should be able to open up all the issues so that this myth of people finding it difficult to travel on Jos road will be unravelled,” he said.
