Mother demands justice over alleged killing of her son by soldier

- From Olatunji Omirin, Maiduguri

The mother of teenager who was allegedly shot dead by a soldier last Tuesday at Wulari ward of Maiduguri metropolis has cried out for justice.

The incident caused pandemonium when the youths of the ward took to the streets, protesting what they described as the unwarranted killing of 18-yearold Jude Nathan.

Mrs Agnes Nathan, Jude’s mother, alleged while narrating her story to Daily Trust that one of the soldiers who stormed Wulari area with riffles slapped her and even stabbed her husband who is a police inspector.

She said: “Everything looked like a drama to me; I could not just believe the whole thing; they were shooting close to my ear and I told them to move a bit farther. That was the genesis of everything, and one of them said they would kill me and nobody would ask them; that/ was when my husband stood up to intervene; one pushed and slapped me.

“I didn’t know how they stabbed my husband and he fell down, my son rushed to the place to defend me and his father; but when he saw his father on the floor, he was running and one of the soldiers shot him three times. All I can now do is to appeal for Justice over the death of my son. The federal government and the Human Rights Commission should ensure that the death of my son does not go in vain.”

When contacted, the spokesman of 7 Division of the Nigeria Army, Maiduguri, Col. Kingsley Samuel, said he was aware of the incident.

“Yes, I am aware of the case that happened in Wulari, but I don’t have details about it now,” Col. Kingsley said on phone.
