I stole my madam’s child because herbalist said I’m barren – Suspect

- From Eugene Agha Lagos

A22-year-old suspect arrested for allegedly stealing a five-monthold baby belonging to her employer has said that she committed the crime because a herbalist told her she can’t have a child of her own.

Suliyat Badmus, who is being detained at the Lagos Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos, told the police that her love for children and her inability to have her own child after three years of marriage forced her into stealing the five months old daughter of her employer in Odoguyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

The suspect who was arrested and paraded by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, yesterday, said her action was out of desperation following what the herbalist had told her.

Badmus said without her husband’s consent, she had applied for a job at the house of one Shukurat Opeoluwadu with the motive of stealing her baby.

According to the police commissioner, the mother of the baby who left to hawk local herbal medicines (agbo) had kept the baby in the care of her 50-year-old neighbour identified as Oluwakemi Amosun.

Edgal said on sensing Amosun was busy outside her room, Badmus stealthily went into the room, stole the baby and absconded.

“On September 27, 2018, the mother of the child made a formal complaint of a missing child. Based on the complaint, I activated the antikidnapping organ of the command to go after the suspect and rescue the baby. Investigation was instituted and eventually the suspect was arrested at Sabo area of Ikorodu.

“The baby was rescued from her and has been reunited with her parents. The suspect has confessed to the crime and on conclusion of investigation, all persons involved in this dastardly act will surely be prosecuted,” Edgal said.
