My husband neglects our 3-month old baby’s corpse in morgue

- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

Aschool teacher, Foluke Ojo, in tears, yesterday narrated to an Oja-Oba customary court how her husband neglected the corpse of her three-month old baby at University College Hospital (UCH) mortuary morgue, two months after his demise.

The petitioner also told the court that her mother in-law was a troublesome person for insisting to share the same bed with her for three and half years.

Foluke, a mother said since she got of one, married to her husband eight years ago, Samson has not been providing basic needs for the family.

She further alleged that Samson brought his mother and a dog to the house without supplying what they would eat, adding that she used to feed them from little money she earns as a teacher.

She said: “My lord, two died out of the three children I had for him. His negligence was responsible for their untimely demise. He didn’t care for me and the children. He didn’t know how we pay for bills in the house. He brought his mother home without supplying for the family. When I told him that my baby was sick, he did not give me money to take care of her. He even told me that he didn’t believe in hospital, but traditional herbs. I’m no more interested, please separate us sir “, she said

Reacting to the allegations, Samson, an industrial engineer, said it was true that he didn’t make any effort to take the corpse of the baby because his wife didn’t inform him before taking the baby to hospital.

He noted that he did not believe that the sickness could be treated in the hospital that was why he ordered her to bring the baby home for proper care before he died.

The president of the court, Chief Odunade Ademola, dissolved the marriage and ordered the defendant to immediately find a way to take the corpse of the baby from the mortuary.

The arbitrator also ordered the defendant to ensure prompt payment of school fees and medical bills of the only surviving child in the marriage which he granted his custody for the plaintiff.
