Owolabi calls for private sector investment in domestic league
Aformer Green Eagles attacking midfielder, Felix Owolabi, has urged government to provide an enabling environment that would attract private investment in the nation domestic league.
Owolabi said yesterday in Lagos that such a development would likely attract viable sponsors to reposition the league.
“Our league is not what it used to be in the past, we must invest in our local league to improve the standard to what is obtainable in South Africa and other parts of the world.
“The attitude of government must be positive toward investors so that they can invest in our league and sports generally.
“The government should come up with a clear policy that will reduce its financial involvement in sports, “he said.
Owolabi is one-time member, Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations in Lagos.
He also urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to engage critical stakeholders to enhance the profile of the league.
“The NFF also has a major part to play for our league to get to the desirable level it should be.
“It should put up formidable blue print that will guide the operation of the league in the country.
“The way the league ended abruptly this season is very bad, this and many more is what the association should look at and forge ahead. (NAN)
