One nabbed over attempted murder, robbery

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) have arrested a 23-year old man for allegedly attempting to rob and ultimately murder a Lagos based Lawyer, Prof. McCarthy Mbadugha.

The police said that the suspect whose name could not be ascertaine­d as at press time is a member of a two-man armed robbery gang operating around Lekki and Ajah axis.

It was learnt that the suspect had trailed the victim from Lagos Island to his office located at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

According to the police, the lawyer had barely settled down to attend to some files in his office when the assailants stormed his office and threatened to kill him if he fails to hand over all cash and valuables on him.

Police spokesman, Chike Oti said, “The unfortunat­e incident happened on Sunday, October 14, 2018. The assailants fired three shots at Prof McCarthy Mbadugha but fortunatel­y enough, the trigger jammed.

“Out of fear, the suspect who Prof. Mbadugha said was the first to enter his office called out to his accomplish. The second suspect who is still at large entered the office armed with dagger.

“All pleas made by the professor to the assailants to spare his life fell on deaf ears as they grabbed hold of him, dragged him to the ground and stabbed him severally on the chest and abdomen.

“The robbers bolted away with cash, phones, laptop, cheque book and other valuables which they could lay their hands on.”

Oti said that bleeding severely, the Professor staggered out of his office and started calling for help from neighbours.

The suspects was arrested by security men attached to the estate.

According to him, the suspect was later handed over to the police at Maroko police station and that he was later transferre­d to FSARS, he said.

Recounting the incident to newsmen, Prof. Mbadugha wondered how the armed men gained entrance into his office.

He said that he entered into a contract with Strong City Security Services Nigeria Ltd to be providing his Law firm with security services at an agreed monthly fees which he pays to the company and the company in turn pays the security guards posted to his firm.
