- By Chidimma C. Okeke

The 5th convocation ceremony at Baze University Abuja, held recently, was a memorable event to parents and the university community as a number of prizes and awards were given to some of the graduands that excelled mainly in academics.

A total of 230 students graduated at the event out of which 10 were granted first class degrees in different fields of studies.

The university, which began full academic activities in 2011, according to the vice chancellor, Professor Tahir Mamman, offers unique opportunities to students to pursue their passion and educational aspirations as a preparation for a career of their choice.

Prof Mamman said the occasion was borne out of the hard work and perseverance of the graduating students and that the university was swollen with pride as it graduated 230 students from three faculties of Law, Computing and Applied Science and Management and Social Sciences.

“You have the academic wherewithal to pursue your life’s passion, be encouraged to defend your certification and be proud of it,” he said.

Prof Mamman said to be successful, one has to work hard and warned the graduands to avoid taking shortcuts in life but approach the new world with brevity and wisdom.

Special prizes were given to Hyelni Joshua Ali, Yusra Yunus Hussain and Jeddy Chidinma Uzodinma as best graduating students of Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences; while Sharon Alohi Ohiro, John Akachukwu Ichie and Patience Mark Yusuf received prizes as best graduating students of Faculty of Law.

Also, Henschel Omokhibo Ojo, Chidubem Nwandu Ikenna and Nengi Ibama received awards as best graduating students for the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences.

Speaking, Nengi Ibama who is the overall best graduating student said he and his colleagues have eagerly waited for their graduation day “so we throw our caps into the air and walk away with our degrees.”

While thanking the lecturers and management for providing the platform to excel, she said it won’t have been possible if students failed to work hand in hand.

According to her, graduating students were key contributors to the prosperity of the university and should not forget their worth which, she said, is immeasurable.

“No matter the circumstances, you must know that the world is waiting for you,” she said.

The special guest at ceremony, retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, commended the effort of the founder of Baze university, who he said has put in so much in bringing the institution to the position it is now.

The pro-chancellor, Sen Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed, assured the special guest of doing more in achieving the desired goals and also thanked all past presidents who have visited the varsity since its inception.

He urged the students to work for the development of the country.
