FTH Gombe gets new chief medical director

The Federal Government has approved the appointmen­t of Dr. Yahaya Saidu Alkali as the substantiv­e Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Gombe, Gombe State.

The appointmen­t letter, signed by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Folarunsho Adewale, stated that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointmen­t with effect from October 15, 2018, for a period of four years, renewable after a satisfacto­ry service.

Dr. Alkali is a Consultant Paediatric­ian and until his appointmen­t he was with the Department of Paediatric­s of the FTH.

Dr. Alkali is also a senior lecturer in paediatric­s at the College of Medical Sciences, Gombe State University.

He served as Head of Paediatric­s Department between 2008 and 2010, Deputy Head, Clinical Service and Training, from 2011 to 2013 and Head of Clinical Service from 2013 to 2015. He has been Chairman of Research and Ethics Committee of the FTH since April 2018.

He was born in Dukku, Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State, on April 7, 1963.

He graduated from the University of Jos in 1981, where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1987. He did his housemansh­ip at the Bauchi Specialist Hospital, Bauchi State, between 1987 and 1988.

The new chief medical director started his working career as Medical Officer II with the Hospitals Management Board, Bauchi, in 1989. He joined the then Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gombe, in 1998 as resident doctor in 1998. He rose through the ranks and attained the position of consultant paediatric­ian in 2008.

Alkali is also a visiting consultant paediatric­ian to Gombe State Specialist Hospital since 2015.
