City back on top after derby masterclass against United

-

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over bitter rivals United at the Etihad Stadium.

Ilkay Gundogan secured three points and derby bragging rights for Manchester City over Manchester United, who returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 win.

The result saw Pep Guardiola’s men extend their unbeaten start to the league season to 12 games, deservedly seeing off United to avenge last season’s second half collapse against their rivals in April. This time, there was to be no comeback.

It took just 12 minutes for City to take the lead in the derby, with David Silva powering a shot past David De Gea following a cut back cross from Bernardo Silva, who exploited space in behind the Man Utd defence.

The Premier League champions doubled their advantage just minutes into the second half when Sergio Aguero lashed a finish through De Gea from a tight angle. But Jose Mourinho’s side halved the deficit from a penalty won by substitute Romelu Lukaku, who was brought down by Ederson. Anthony Martial converted to give United a lifeline.

But City made sure of the win late on. Ilkay Gundogan lost Nemanja Matic to control a Bernardo cross in the box, taking a touch before finding the back of the net. The result sees Guardiola’s team open up a 12-point gap on United.
