Be safety conscious as 2018 ends, LASEMA advises Lagos residents

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged Lagos State residents to be safety conscious as the year 2018 gradually winds to an end.

The agency also said there was the need to demystify the belief among some people that the months of September and December were often attended by life and propertyconsuming tragedies like major vehicle accidents and fire outbreaks.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA), Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, expressed in a statement yesterday the dire need for attitudinal change by the people, especially motorists and commuters, whom he said were always in a haste in the months of November and December to earn more money.

Such haste, Tiamiyu said, often led to major road accidents which were caused by over-speeding/reckless driving, drinking of alcohol and non-adherence to traffic rules.

He attributed a major cause of fire outbreak during the ember months to dry air during the period. He also said LASEMA had discovered that many people don’t switch off electrical appliances not in use.

This, he said, often results in electrical fire outbreaks in homes and public places, adding such fires are often difficult to control because of the dry season.

Tiamiyu advised electricity consumers to adopt electrical safety measures like always switching off electrical appliances when not in use, avoiding naked wires, and avoiding storage of combustible substances like petrol and kerosene.

The General Manager disclosed that in a bid to stem occurrences of major disasters and emergencies in the state, LASEMA would be embarking on a road show to sensitize Lagos residents on the Lagos State Emergency Toll Free Line 112/767, and running jingles on various media platforms on emergency prevention/ mitigation.
