Mathematical center conducts workshop mental development among students in Bauchi
The National Mathematical Center has conducted a workshop in Bauchi on the improvement of Mental arithmetic and Mathematical improvement among pupils.
The workshop was part of efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requirements as regards to child development.
Speaking at the workshop, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Professor Haruna Abdullahi Danwanka said that, the workshop would help in the child mental development plans in education.
Danwanka, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Technical and Vocational Services, Dr Rimi Maisamari, said that, quality education as key to development and a transformation tool was necessary for human growth and development.
He said the state governor has, as part of measures to improve the quality of education in the state, introduced various human capacity development programmes in the education sector.
He added that, the governor had also embarked on massive infrastructural development in the sector through construction and renovation of structures like classrooms, offices and provision of furniture in schools across the state.
The commissioner commended the National Mathematical Center for organising the workshop which he said will help in improving the knowledge and development of children’s mental capacities.
He said the state government would continue to collaborate with the center for the introduction of programmes that will improve mathematics and science learning in schools.
In his address, the Chief Executive, National Mathematical Center, Professor Stephen Onah said that the center has trained many students across the country in the past six years to improve their mental capacities and it has been recording successes.
He said that, the workshop was aimed at addressing cases of low academic performance in Arithmetics and Mathematics.
According to him, the programme enabled people who are seen as slow learners to pick up in two weeks.
He said that, the exercise aided children’s ability to manipulate Abacus which will help them build self confidence and concentration especially in examinations or competitions.
