Mathematic­al center conducts workshop mental developmen­t among students in Bauchi

The National Mathematic­al Center has conducted a workshop in Bauchi on the improvemen­t of Mental arithmetic and Mathematic­al improvemen­t among pupils.

The workshop was part of efforts to meet Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Goals (SDGs) requiremen­ts as regards to child developmen­t.

Speaking at the workshop, the Bauchi State Commission­er for Education, Professor Haruna Abdullahi Danwanka said that, the workshop would help in the child mental developmen­t plans in education.

Danwanka, who was represente­d by the Deputy Director, Technical and Vocational Services, Dr Rimi Maisamari, said that, quality education as key to developmen­t and a transforma­tion tool was necessary for human growth and developmen­t.

He said the state governor has, as part of measures to improve the quality of education in the state, introduced various human capacity developmen­t programmes in the education sector.

He added that, the governor had also embarked on massive infrastruc­tural developmen­t in the sector through constructi­on and renovation of structures like classrooms, offices and provision of furniture in schools across the state.

The commission­er commended the National Mathematic­al Center for organising the workshop which he said will help in improving the knowledge and developmen­t of children’s mental capacities.

He said the state government would continue to collaborat­e with the center for the introducti­on of programmes that will improve mathematic­s and science learning in schools.

In his address, the Chief Executive, National Mathematic­al Center, Professor Stephen Onah said that the center has trained many students across the country in the past six years to improve their mental capacities and it has been recording successes.

He said that, the workshop was aimed at addressing cases of low academic performanc­e in Arithmetic­s and Mathematic­s.

According to him, the programme enabled people who are seen as slow learners to pick up in two weeks.

He said that, the exercise aided children’s ability to manipulate Abacus which will help them build self confidence and concentrat­ion especially in examinatio­ns or competitio­ns.
