...’NBC not aware of ICPC investigation on DG’

- By Zakariyya Adaramola

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said it not aware of any investigation by the ICPC on its Director General Is’haq Modibbo Kawu.

The commission’s spokesperson, Hajia Maimuna Jimada, told our reporter yesterday that the NBC “is not aware of any fraud case involving the DG, and therefore not aware of any ICPC investigation on the DG.”

She said the commission had been carrying out the Digital Switch-Over scheme with utmost diligence and transparency, and would continue to do that till the project was completed across the country.

Kawu could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Daily Trust reports that Nigeria had missed two previous deadlines (in June 2016 and June 2017) set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for all countries to switch off their analogue broadcasting and switch on to the digital broadcasting.

This, according to the ITU, is to free up the spectrum space for the use of telecommunications sector.

Making available more spectrum spaces will mean a more ubiquitous broadband internet across the world, according to the ITU.

The National Broadband Plan committee Nigeria has set a target of 30% broadband penetration by the end of 2018, and Nigeria’s broadband penetration level currently stands at 22%, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission.
