We used scientific approach to combat crime in Lagos – Edgal

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, at the weekend said most of the violent crimes committed in the state were resolved through scientific approach of modern day policing.

EdgalwhileaddressingAfrican Security Chiefs in faraway Gambia urged governments of African countries to desist from the traditional ways of tackling crime, but rather adopt the use of modern technology.

Edgal who was honoured with two categories of award: The Golden Star Award for Urban Crime Control and the Most Outstanding Urban Crime Control Command in West and Central Africa, at the 15th Security Watch Africa, Awards, Conference and Exhibition, in Banjul, The Gambia, made this disclosure in a paper he delivered titled: “The Use of Sciences in modern Day Policing: The Lagos Example”.

Edgal noted that crime had become very sophisticated all over the world, asserting that it should be fought with higher precision, if the desired result could be achieved.

He said: “Lagos State as an example of a mega city across the globe, was also bedeviled with various patterns of crimes that characterised a mega city, such as armed robbery, murder, internet fraud, kidnapping, trans-border crimes, among others.

He said the high rate of migration of people seeking greener pastures with the resultanteffectofunprecedented rise in population, without corresponding social infrastructure in place, couple with the scanty socio-economic infrastructure result in vearious security challenges.
