SWAN rounds off secondary school sports competition

- From Andrew Agbese, Kaduna

Kaduna State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) has rounded off the 2018 edition of its secondary school sports tournament with six schools participating.

The schools competed in three events, table tennis, chess and scrabble.

Chairman of Kaduna SWAN, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin attributed the low turn out of participating schools to the constant postponement of the event due to various issues.

“The event suffered postponements for several occasions, not as a result of our fault but for political and security issues.

“The first was the political primaries which took up the venues we were supposed to use, while the second postponement came as a result of the curfew following the crisis in Kaduna metropolis,” he said.

He said the event was not about medals winning, but to develop talents and assured that subsequent one would be better packaged.

The Kaduna State Government had expressed its willingness to partner associations and organizations sponsoring sporting competitions at the grassroots.

Kaduna State Commissioner Youth Sports and Culture, Daniel Danauta who spoke at the opening of the tournament said the event was an opportunity for harnessing talents from the grassroots.
