FAAN to sanction agencies, operators over debt
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) may sanction some government agencies and private airport operators over huge indebtedness to the agency, Daily Trust can report.
This follows the expiration of the 30-day notice given to the debtors to settle all outstanding debts.
Among the debtors, it was learnt, are operators of state and private airports like Bauchi Airport, Osubi Airstrip, Warri and Gombe Airports.
Daily Trust reports that other aviation agencies have been under pressure to recover debts being owed by their clients.
FAAN on October 22 gave a one-month notice to the affected agencies of government and operators to settle their debt.
As the one-month period ended, yesterday, it was learnt that the agency may apply the necessary sanctions on the affected agencies.
According to the notice issued by FAAN, the agency threatened to withdraw its security personnel from the affected organizations at the airports.
The notice read: “In view of the above, the Authority hereby notifies private airport operators that the services of our Aviation Security and Airport Fire and Rescue personnel will no longer be available for the operations of their airports with effect from Wednesday 21st November, 2018 as the Authority can no longer keep these personnel at the airports working without payment.”
Though the deadline issued by the agency expired last week, the authority is yet to issue the sanction as it still expects some level of compliance from the affected agencies.
A source said, “We are hoping the affected debtors would show some level of seriousness in reconciling their indebtedness and paying up in order to continue to enjoy our services or else the sanctions would eventually be applied soon.”
