FCTA denies erosion threat in 20 communities

- By Malikatu Umar Shuaibu

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has denied a media report that 20 communities in the FCT are being threatened by erosion.

The FCTA maintained that it was committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property of residents of the territory.

The Public Relations Officer of Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), Meeme Felicia, in a statement, said the publication captured the collapsed Ashara bridge and also referred to that a bridge on the GwagwaladaDobi-Izom road had collapsed.

The Coordinator of STDD, Hon. Tanko Ishaku Yamawo, in the statement, said the Ashara bridge was currently undergoing reconstruction by the Ecological Fund Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Hon. Yamawo also said the failed structure on the Gwagwalada-Dobi Izom road was a five-cell 1,500mm pipe culvert and not a bridge as claimed by the publication.

“The cell was rendered inadequate and this led to the failure of the culvert and the flooding was a flash flood that happens once in a season.

“Besides this, a new triple cell 3m×3m box culvert has been constructed within the seven-kilometre realigned segment which has not yet been done. The Gwagwalada-Dobi-Izom road covers 27km out of which eight kilometres from the Dobi axis has been completed and is functioning effectively, while the remaining 19km length will be completed soon,” Yamawo said in the statement.
