NTIC students produce biodiesel from cassava, palm wine
Students of Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC), Abuja have produced fuel from cassava and palm wine which is among projects exhibited at their 5th annual science and arts fair in Abuja recently.
The Principal of NTIC Abuja Boys Section, Mr. Muazu Omeji, speaking on the significance of project, said biodiesel is an alternative energy source and could be a substitute for petroleum-based diesel.
He said, “One of the most cultivated farm produce in Nigeria is cassava and if properly harnessed it can contribute in no small measure to the nation’s economy in terms of production and usage both at domestic and industrial levels.”
Mr. Omeji said the colleges would create the environment that fosters learning and continuously breed well rounded citizens who would contribute their quota to the overall growth and development of Nigeria, the African continent and the world at large.
The project, which was exhibited alongside over 60 others by the students, was commended for its potential in solving the issue of pollution as an excellent and complete combustion can be achieved through it. It reduces the emission of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide pollution into the environment.
One of the students involved in the project said the product was welcomed because it was a clean-burning liquid fuel that has the potential to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emission thereby bringing about reduction of greenhouse effect and global warming.
About 544 students from 40 schools in Abuja took part in the fair.
