Team Tech Vibes through to NCC Tennis League Cup Finals
In a pulsating tie which took place at the Enugu Sports Club, the Jos-based team took the decisive ladies’ singles to pave the way for a close 4-3 victory against Team Leadway Assurance of Lagos
Tech Vibe will now face Team Offikwu of Kaduna in the championship match slated for tomorrow, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
Both teams split the opening men’s singles with Babalola Abdulmumin beating Thomas Otu 6-3, 6-4 and national champion, Joseph Imeh, winning a hard-fought match against Zenith Bank Next Generation champion, Philip Abayomi, 6-4, 6-4.
It now fell on the ladies to decide the direction of the tie and surprisingly, it was national women’s champion, Sarah Adegoke who blinked. A tireless and defensive Aanu Aiyegbusi sat back and soaked up all the hard-hitting from Adegoke who squandered 11 break points including three from 0-40 to win 6-43, 6-4.
a deflated Leadway Assurance lost the men’s doubles to trail 3-1 at the end of the first day and Otu got an unassailable 4-1 lead by beating Abayomi in the first reverse singles Tuesday.
Leadway Assurance still found some resolve to win the second reverse singles through Babalola who beat Adehi Ochei 6-3, 6-2 and won the mixed doubles where the pair of Bicom and Adegoke beat Bala Musa and Osareme Airhunwhunde 6-4, 6-4.
The two semifinal ties featured a record total of 10 active and current national champions.
Team Leadway Assurance played for third place against Team Goshen of Ilorin yesterday and the second leg today while the championship tie will hold tomorrow, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9, all at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
The presentation match and ceremony has been fixed for 13.00 hours on Sunday with the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, as the special guest of honour.
