13-year-old clinches 1 Division Walk/Jog competition
Nendirwma Amos, a 13-yearold girl has clinched the first position at the 1 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters Kaduna walking/jogging exercise, covering 250 kilometres which ran over one month.
The competition was initiated by the outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Division, Major General Mohammed Mohammed, to encourage soldiers and their families to engage in physical exercise.
It involves participants taking a walk/jog on each of the 30 days and the distance covered by each contestant is recorded at the end of each day. Contestant who covers the most distance is declared the winner at the end of the 30 days.
Arewa Trust reports that the first 14 winners were given brand new bicycles while others were given cash prices.
Speaking to Arewa Trust after collecting her prize, Nendirwma, a student of Bethe Baptist School, Kaduna, said the prize would make her put in more effort in engaging in physical exercise.
“I only missed one day during the 30-day competition because I was determined to get to the desired number of points required to win,” she said.
Nendirwma, whose father is a corporal, thanked to the GOC for initiating the competition and called on Nigerians to engage in physical exercise to stay healthy.
Speaking after presenting prizes and awards to the winners, Major General Mohammed Mohammed said the competition was aimed at improving the wellbeing of personnel and their families.
“The importance of exercise to individual cannot be overemphasized. Exercise increases the growth and development of the young ones while it prevents aging, enhances weight loss and its maintenance and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular activities in adults.
“It also increases the immune system in order to prevent several diseases, thus improve and maintain the physical fitness and overall health of personnel and therefore enhance professionalism.”
While assuring that more categories of the competition would be introduced to reflect weight and age group and urged personnel and their family to participate.
