Gunmen kill taxi driver in Edo cult-related fights

A taxi driver identified as Madueke Obiagu, was on Monday shot dead by unknown gunmen in Benin, the Edo State capital.

It was gathered that the victim was shot dead in front of his house, located at Akugbe Street, off Santana road, Ikpoba Hill axis of Benin.

It was further gathered that the gunmen allegedly attacked him while putting a battery into his Audi 80 saloon car.

Speaking with journalist­s, the wife of the deceased, Ifeoma Obiagu, said her husband had sent her to get some foodstuff at the market when the incident happened.

“I don’t know what happened, the only thing I remember is that he asked me to go to the market to buy foodstuff. As I was returning, some people said that there were shootings at Omoigui. I ran into my house for cover.

“On getting to the house, I asked for my husband and was told that he was inside the house. But when I entered, they told me to calm down, that he was shot while he was putting battery his car,” she said.

When contacted, the state police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident, saying at about 11am, the Divisional Police Officer in the area received a distress call that a young man was shot by unknown criminals.

“When police operatives arrived at the scene of the incident, they were told that some boys shot him dead. They were equally told that the deceased’s name was Madueke Obiagu. The body was immediatel­y taken to Our Clinic Medical Centre mortuary in the area.”

He said the case is a cult-related fight and killings that have been going on in Benin, adding that investigat­ion is ongoing in the case.
