- From Doyin Adebusuyi, Ado Ekiti

The Ekiti State government has released the sum of a N27.9 million grant to 208 public secondary schools in the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr Ayodeji Ajayi, who made this known in Ado Ekiti yesterday, said the grant was meant for the first term of the 2018/2019 academic year.

Ajayi said the benefiting schools included the three special schools for the deaf, the blind and the mentally retarded and physically challenged at Ikoro, Ikere and Ido-Ekiti respectively.

He disclosed that the state government would do everything possible but within available resources to ensure that quality education reaches all students irrespective of where their schools are located.

In another development, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology had been presented with the interim report on the alleged unruly behaviour of the football team of the AUD Comprehensive High School, Ado- Ekiti, which is currently participating in the ongoing Principals’ Soccer Cup Competition.

Consequently, the school has been banned from participating in all sporting activities for the next three years for involving in a violent act against match officials.

The school, according to the ministry, would not benefit from any sports grant/equipment from the government for the period of the ban.

The decision, according to the Permanent Secretary, followed the recommendation of the steering committee set up to handle the 2019 edition of the Principals’ Cup competition, which is currently in the group stages.

Ajayi, who described sports as a major tool that can foster positive relationship and healthy rivalry among schools, emphasised that any school or team found engaging in any violent act would be seriously dealt with.
