Court remands man over sexual assault on 7-year-old girl

An Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court on Thursday remanded a 55-year-old man, Ngozi Igwe, who allegedly sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl.

Magistrate Olufunke SuleAmzat ordered that the defendant should be kept in the Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, pending advice from the state director of public prosecutio­ns.

Thus, the court did not take the plea of the defendant.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 23 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, a resident of Junaid Street in IgboEfon, Lekki, Lagos, was charged on one count.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, had told the court that the defendant committed the sexual assault in October 2018 and November 2018, at his residence.

Emuerhi alleged that the defendant sexually assaulted his neighbour’s seven -year-old daughter by putting his finger on the child’s private part.

He submitted that the case was reported at the Maroko Police Division by the victim’s father and later transferre­d to the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for further investigat­ion.

He noted that the alleged offence contravene­d Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. A Magistrate Court in Badagry, Lagos State, has ordered that a security man, who allegedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl, be remanded in prison.

The police charged Wusu Fasinu, 54, whose address was not provided, is charged with three counts of indecent assault, sexual assault and breach of peace.

Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya, who gave the order, adjourned the case until April 2, for further hearing.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Akpan Ikem, told the court that the accused committed the offencs on Feb. 11, at about 7 a.m. at the Government College Ajara, Badagry.

Fasinu alleged that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.

The prosecutor said that the offence, is punishable under the sections 259, 261 and 266 of criminal law of Lagos State, 2015 as amended.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. (NAN)
