- By Orkula Shaagee

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) has signed an agreement with the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) for the hosting of the maiden edition of African Track Championship ‘African Cup 2019’.

The championship to be staged at the National Velodrome Complex, package A of the Abuja National Stadium is slated for July 27-28 this year.

The agreement signed last weekend in Rome, Italy by CFN President, Engr. Giandomenico Massari and President of CAC Dr Mohammed Azzam, coincided with the joint Confederation of Africa Cycling and EU Cycling congress. It was signed in the presence of Mr David Lappartient, President of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Mr Renato Di Rocco President Italian Cycling Federation and Vice President of UCI. With the agreement, president of CFN Engr Massari said the Federation would soon set in motion a strategic marketing plan to woo sponsors for the African Cup. Giving reasons why the Federation pushed to secure hosting right of the maiden edition of the championship, Engr Masaari explained that Nigeria stands to benefit from the track championship, citing glaring evidence that Nigeria youths have what it takes to excel in track Cycling.

Only recently, two Nigeria cyclists, Gladys Tombrakpa and Mary Samuel shocked cycling enthusiasts winning seven medals between them at an elite championship held in South Africa.
