Qur’an competitio­n: Borno, Edo to represent Nigeria in internatio­nal contest

Two male winners in recitation and memorizati­on of the whole Qur’an with eloquence and its sciences, Abdurrahma­n Bunu from Borno and Yusuf Yahaya from Edo states respective­ly are to represent Nigeria at the internatio­nal competitio­n in Turkey in May this year.

Also, female winners in the different categories would represent the FCT at the National Quranic completion late this year in Kano State. This is part of the outcome of the fourth Edition of Qur’anic Recitation Competitio­n, which started last Friday, organised by the Islamic Promotion Initiative of Nigeria (IPIN) and the Turkiye Diyanet Foundation of Republic of Turkey at the Abuja National Mosque Sunday night.

While Mallam Bunu came first in the 60 Hizb (segments), he was followed by Ismail Umar from Niger State and Abdulmalik Ahmad from Ogun State who came third.

Also, while Mallam Yahya won the tangeem (melodic mode), Ibrahim M. Ibrahim of Borno State came second and Ajmul Nura Shema of Katsina State came third.

In the female category, Maimuna Abdurrahma­n from Abaji Area Council won the five hizb, Aisha Sani, Kuje won the 10 hizb; Fauziyya Shehu AMAC, won the 20 hizb; Halima Muhammad, Gwagwalada won the 40 hizb and Surrayya Muhammad won the 60 hizb.

The IPIN Chairman, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, said the programme was launched four years ago as part of measures to promote the recitation of the Qur’an with tajweed (eloquence).

“I can say that there is lots of improvemen­t among the reciters, so much that you would not be able to know who would win and who would not win because almost all of them are perfect. Everyone is doing their best to know the science of the Holy Qur’an,” Dr. Adam who is also one of the Imams of the National Mosque, Abuja said.

When asked on the performanc­e of the females, he said the female reciters are impressive such that they are even competing favourable in the 60 hizb.
