Rangers exit CAF Confederation Cup
Following their 1-0 loss to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxein in their final Group B game of the CAF Confederations Cup yesterday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu Rangers have exited the Cup competition.
The first half produced very little in terms of goal mouth action with both sides squandering possession in the final third.
The home side did see more of the ball, but they struggled to create any real openings as the half ended goalless.
Sfaxien started find their feet in the second half and saw more of the ball which allowed them to take the lead in the 73rd minute courtesy of a strike from Nadhir Korichi, 1-0.
Rangers tried to find their way back into the match and controlled the flow of the game after going behind, but they could find no equaliser.
The result, combined with Group B’s other result yesterday which saw Etoile Sahel beat Salitas 1-0, means Sfaxien finish top of the standings with 12 points.
Etoile Sahel are second with ten points while Rangers, in third with five points, and Salitas, last with four points, exit the cup competition.
Meanwhile, Raja Casablanca ended their CAF Confederations Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Otoho D’Oyo in a Group A game at the Stade Omnisport Marien Ngouabi d’Owando in the Republic of the Congo.
Despite the result, both teams exit the cup competition following Group A’s other result yesterday which saw Hassania Agadir beat Berkane 1-0.
Raja finished Group A in third place on seven points, a point behind third-placed Hassania while Otoho finished bottom with five points.
The home side started brightly and made their pressure tell with the opening goal in the 16th minute courtesy of a striker from Dimitri Bissiki.
Raja started to find their footing in the game after going behind and managed to draw level in the 41st minute when Mahmoud Benhalib found the back of the net.
A minute before the break the Moroccan side were able to take the lead when a swift passing move ended with Sanad Msoud producing a clinical finish to make it 2-1 at the break.
