1 killed, 3 arrested over attempt to attack police station

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Three kidnap suspects the police alleged have been operating in Ikorodu and its environs have been arrested over an attempt to overrun a police station.

The suspects were alleged to be behind the abduction of some under-aged girls in the area in recent times.

The police identified the suspects as Ahmed Hassan, Daniel Enyin and Olaniran Alium.

It was learnt that an SS1 student, Hadiyat Sikiru, 18, was allegedly shot dead by a stray bullet fired by the police in an attempt to repel the kidnap suspects.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, said that the attack took place about 11.30am yesterday.

Elkana said that the arrest followed a tip-off from some members of the public who complained of the criminal activities of the gang.

“Based on the strength of the information, a team of policemen on surveillance at Adama community, Ikorodu, raided a den of cultists who specialise in ritual murder and kidnapping for ritual purposes.

“On sighting the police, they opened fire and equally used some of their hostages as human shields. During the operation that lasted for about one hour, two police officers were injured, while the three suspects were arrested. One Hadiyat Sikiru, 18, an SS1 Student was hit by a stray bullet.

“An attempt by other members of the deadly gang to attack our police station at Imota was met with stiff resistance by the gallant officers on duty,” he added.
