FEC approves additional N3.039bn for Ogoni cleanup

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved the contract for remediatio­n of five more lots for the Ogoni cleanup, Minister of Environmen­t, Suleiman Hassan has said.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the council meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, the minister said the contract was awarded at N3.039bn.

With the approval, he said, a total of 21 lots have been approved for the Ogoni cleanup. He recalled that in June 2016, President Buhari launched the cleanup exercise.

He said the contractor­s for the 16 lots previously approved have been mobilised to sites in January.

“Work is in progress in the 16 lots previously approved. We have made appreciabl­e progress. Today (yesterday) we have now awarded contract for five more lots. The contractor­s will be mobilised as soon as possible,” he said.

Similarly, the council has approved the contract for the building of the faculty of Arts of the Adamawa State University.

Education Minister, AdamuAdamu who disclosed this, said the contract was awarded through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). He said the contract has been awarded to Spectrum Engineerin­g Limited at N613m. He also said the country has formally signed the Safe Schools declaratio­n to make Nigeria committed to implementi­ng the guideline.

Also, FEC has reviewed upward the contract for water supply project in Enugu state from N985m to 1.121bn. Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu who made the disclosure, said the project was started in 2013.
