The Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NiMechE) has trained 30 young girls on auto repairs.

Speaking in Abuja after the training and induction of “Girls Auto Squad” (GAS), the initiator of the programme, Mrs Joyce Adams said the initiative was aimed at creating opportunity for young girls who have passion to learn mechanics.

Mrs Adams who is the founder of “Auto Lady”, an Abuja based auto repair firm, said: “We came up with this idea to encourage women and to show them that it is not only men can do mechanics job, that we are also capable and we want to challenge them”.

“This is a direct response to the problems facing by girls in our society and we want to close the gender disparity in the mechanic sector as it is largely dominates by the male gender.

‘’In our first phase of the programme, we are going to train 500 girls across the country.’’

One of the inductees, Deborah Joshua said: “I chose this because I have passion to learn mechanics and since I have experience and I see this opportunity I will gladly take it to make my dream come true.’’

Another inductee, Joy Idia also said “Passion drove me to this, and I like doing things that are common in a society that is why I chose this career.”

The chairman of the occasion, Engr. Robinson I. Elijah said the initiative was focused on reducing the number of unemployed girls in the society.
