- From Maryam Ahmadu-Suka, Kaduna

About drug addicts and mentally challenged persons have been offered free dental and medical services by a team of professional medical experts including dentist and other medical practitioners.

The leader of the team, HajiyaMaryam Abubakar, who is the Managing Director of Fatimah Clinic and Maternity, Kaduna and founder Women for Women Initiative said they decided to offer free dental services to over 100 100 drug addicts and mentally challenged persons at the Nigga Rehabilitation Centre in Kaduna to mark the World Oral Health Day (WOHD).

She said oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease are widespread and preventable through proper self-care, regular dental check-ups and managing risk factors.

“Because the patients are in a rehabilitation centre, they do not have the privilege to go out at will, that was why the NGO decided to take the medical mission to the place for free dental services in order to provide humanitarian service.

“The WOHD is an opportunity to coordinate global and national efforts and to work together to make as much noise as possible targeted toward educating and enlightening the public on the importance of preventing teeth diseases.”

She said that services rendered to the patients included scaling, polishing, filling and removal of decayed teeth.

She appealed to the patients to take good care of their health in order to live healthy and long live.

“When you are physically fit and free to go home you should not go back to the lifestyle that brought you to be at the rehabilitation centre.”

She further counselled oral health professionals on the important role they have to play in addressing the burden of oral diseases by helping their communities to be protected against all forms of diseases associated with the teeth and the general mouth surrounding.

On his part, the Founder of the rehabilitation centre, Malam Lawal Maduru, thanked the organisation for the gesture saying, the celebration of World Oral Day is very important because it emphasises the need to give attention to dental hygiene
