One year term captaincy meaningless

- By Tony Akhigbe [08056180071]

Come April 27, members of the IBB Golf Club in Abuja will go to the polls to elect men and women that would direct affairs of the club for, sorry to mention it, another one year.

Go to the Club today and you will see all manners of campaign ongoing. For a minute, you will want to believe Buhari and Atiku are about going into a fresh battle with INEC watching by the sidelines.

The whole vast premises are presently awash with quality posters while the gladiators are engaging in intensive door to door campaign. Some aspirants even take it a bit further by engaging in campaigns of calumny.

This is indeed the time you will hear tales about members who have been cheating on the course all this while. This is the time members who struggle on the subscription ladder will be exposed. Not to make mention of those who are owing bills. All these needless noises. But one noise. But, truly, to achieve what? A one term reign that

is utterly meaningless.

Let’s face it, what will any individual accomplish in one year after pouring sweat of ten years in campaigns. Nothing. Yes nothing that will leave the fellow completely content. But we live in a world of delusion.

A world that will never afford you a flutter of excitement. A world that is broken up into hysterics. A world that will make you believe that if it’s just three months reign, you are already labeled ‘a past Captain’. What impudence.

The whole truth reads like a mirage for a year Captain. The more he thinks he is touching a project, the further the project moves. Then he leaves the halfbaked project for another one year captain who will leave it for another fellow. This is the reason you hardly see any meaningful infrastructure in clubs for years.

But trust Nigerians. They don’t care if about every member of the club has been a captain at one time or the other. It’s like each man living out his own ego and merriments and may be listen to the ring of the cash register.

It’s a whole circle of enjoyment. A Captain that is departing will have a funfilled Captain’s day while the one that is just resuming will have the ‘Inaugural Tourney’. All these will gulp millions of naira while the Club is rendered impoverished. This is sad and funny at the same time.

Go to Clubs who have seen appreciable development in recent years and you will discover that their Captains indeed stayed for more than a year. For instance, Col Ibrahim Biu needed a whole of two years to turn around the Kaduna Golf Club while Umar Babangida stayed in power at the Kano Golf Club to ensure the Club has a brand new Clubhouse.

It is about time we stop this game of deceit in golf. No human can rule a Club in just one year and achieve anything meaningful. This is the bitter truth.
