Amaechi wants tricycles, motorcycles’ operators retrained
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has advised the leadership of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) to retrain its members in line with global best practices.
The minister, represented by Anthonia Ekpa, a director in the ministry, gave the advice at the inauguration of the association’s new National President, Alhaji Shamsudeen Adebayo Apelogun, in Abuja.
He said some members of the association often committed many road infractions, adding that ACOMORAN was being infiltrated by questionable persons who posed security threat across the country.
The minister said regulations were underway to check the recurring decimal, adding that the ministry was working to ensure reduction in the cost of operation through the introduction of solar powered tricycles.
“You will have to ensure that your members operate within the laws of the land and within international best practices, such as it is obtainable in other parts of the world.
“The ministry also worried that some miscreants will use tricycles and motorcycles, posing as members of this very reputable organization to is cause havoc and security challenges across the country. This is why we want to extract a commitment from the new president that your members will work with the ministry to be retrained and rebrand like our counterparts in other countries,” he said.
Earlier, chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Olugbenga Ashafa, had urged commercial riders to place safety above all other considerations and stick to designated routes.
