British Council trains 12 Institutions on Research on Peace in Yobe
The British Council, in collaboration with Yobe State University, Damaturu, has trained lecturers and researchers of 12 tertiary institutions on ways to respond to issue of safety, security and peace.
The programme, funded by European Union, was designed to strengthen the capacity of teachers and researchers from the selected institutions.
Speaking at the event in Damaturu, the Technical Lead, Managing Conflicts in Northeast Nigeria (MCN) Programme, Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, said the theme of workshop, “Research Methodology in Peace Building Contexts” would enhance skills of lecturers in the benefiting institutions.
“Despite the security challenge in the northeast region, there are opportunities for economic growth and hope that sustainable initiatives can be developed with communities to support restoration of peace in the states.”
He regretted that the recommendations arising from research conducted by students and academics end up not being implemented.
“This could not be unconnected with the lack of, or inadequate, contextual and conflict sensitivity as well as advocacy and sensitization skills of the researchers”, he added.
The Vice Chancellor, Yobe State University, Prof. Yakubu Muktar, who developed the concept note and sought for the support of MCN programme, said the workshop will enhance the skills of researchers and civil society organisations.
He said the training would expose them on how to apply for research grants, conduct action research and follow up the implementation of research policy recommendations for better results.
“It is envisaged that the workshop will not only improve the research skills of the participants but also activate them to conceive and seek for funds to conduct baseline action on research that will enhance good governance, propel development and mitigate conflicts in Yobe state,” he said.
