2019 presidential candidates urge Sowore’s release

- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

The coalition of 2019 Presidential Aspirants and Candidates, under the aegis of Third Force Forum, yesterday called for unconditional release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omowole Sowore.

Sowore was arrested and detained by the operatives of the Department of State Services for calling for a revolution in the country.

In a statement, they noted that the constitution of Nigeria does not allow violation of human rights.

The statement was signed by Tope Fasua, presidential candidate of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party; Okey Samuel Mbonu, presidential aspirant of the Labour Party; SKC Ogbonnia, presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress; Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, presidential aspirant of the Alliance for New Nigeria; Emmanuel Etim, presidential candidate of the Change Nigeria Party; Ayodele O. Favour, presidential aspirant of the Young Progressives Party; Clement Jimbo, presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party.

They implored President Muhammadu Buhari to order relevant security agencies to immediately release Sowore unconditionally in order to maintain peace in the country.

The statement reads in part: “We must also remind you, Mr. President, that in addition to the Nigerian constitution, Nigeria also subscribes to other international treaties, which prohibit violation of human rights of her citizens.

“To refrain from adhering to these national and international rights is to invite anarchy onto the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
