2 in EFCC net for currency counterfei­t, fraud

Two suspects are currently cooling their heels at the EFCC zonal office in Makurdi in Benue State over alleged currency counterfei­ting and fraud.

The two men; Moses Adukwu and Iorlumun Reuben after their apprehensi­on were transferre­d to the EFCC Makurdi zonal office from the Department of State Security Service (DSS).

Head of Informatio­n and Communicat­ion of the EFCC in Makurdi, Nwanyinma Okeanu, in a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi, explained that 27 years old Reuben from Vandeikya local government area of Benue state was arrested by men from DSS who rescued him from being lynched.

Okeanu stated that the suspect had purchased airtime from a woman who noticed he paid her with fake currency and alerted people around, adding that when interrogat­ed, Reuben stated that he was introduced to the business by another man still at large who had also introduced him to a supplier called Moses Adukwu.

She said the suspect also confessed to still be in possession of about N18,000 fake currencies which he has been unable to spend before his arrest.

The EFCC official stated further that 33 year old Adukwu who hails from Olamaboro local government area of Kogi State and a former bus driver joined the counterfei­ting business in 2017.

She stated that Adukwu alleged he was introduced to the business by one Mohammed still at large, stressing that the suspect confessed to have visited Lagos to get his consignmen­t but his meeting with the supplier was conducted under the Oshodi bridge.

Subsequent­ly, he paid the cash equivalent into the supplier's account while his consignmen­t of fake currencies is sent to him by waybill process.

She added that Adukwu revealed during interrogat­ion that for N50,000 real currency, he gets about four hundred thousand naira fake naira notes in four packets. He then sells each pack of fake currency for twenty five thousand naira of real currency.

Okeanu said that both suspect are assisting the EFCC in their investigat­ions and would soon be arraigned in court.
