Youths in Jos North local government area of Plateau State and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) are putting measures to ensure a hitchfree Sallah celebration devoid of activities of hoodlums popularly called ``Sara-suka’’.
Benue/Plateau Trust reports that the menace of the deadly group had in the last few years become more pronounced during Sallah festivities in Jos North. The deadly gang are known to perform nightly ritual they term shara in which they attack residents and damage properties in certain communities in Jos.
However, the Commander of Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Jos North, Sani Kachalla told our correspondent that the VGN had in the last three weeks been collaborating with the police in a night patrol around flash point areas.
Kachalla said: “We are also planning an intensive patrol on Friday night and on the eve of Sallah. Another one is scheduled to take place after the Sallah celebration.”
He said though the patrol has yielded positive impact, such measures could only reduce but not eradicate the menace since the youths dwell more on drugs and substances.
Youths in Jos North under the Coalition of Jos Concerned Youths Association (COJOYA) also said they have taken an advocacy measure to eradicate the menace.
The coalition, through its chairman, Buhari Ibrahim Nashehu, said that they have commenced engagements with some members of the gang around Congo and Yan Tifa in Jos North adding that, “from the results we are getting, we would most likely have a peaceful Sallah celebration, God willing.”
