3 abducted in Ogun, as Abiodun mulls death penalty

- From Peter Moses, Abeokuta

Three persons have been reportedly kidnapped at Ode Omi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The abductors, who were said to have kidnapped the community’s Chief Imam’s son and two others, also reportedly stole the state’s Police Command speedboat.

Our correspondent recalls that Ode-Omi, a remote border town between Lagos and Ogun, came into prominence two years

ago due to the activities of militants who relocated to the once peaceful town from Arepo, following the bombardment of their camps by air force jets.

The police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the kidnapping incident last night, saying the abduction took place about three days ago.

He, however, dismissed the report that speedboat was stolen by the hoodlums.

Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun has said his government is considering sending a Bill that will attract capital punishment for kidnapping to the State House of Assembly for legislative action.

Abiodun gave the indication when he played host to Remo Leaque of Imams who paid him a Sallah homage at his Iperu home described kidnapping as economic crime that must be stopped at all means.

He said most of the kidnappers were foreigners who disguise as herdsmen, saying that it would not augur well if criminals are allowed to operate unchecked as it would affect the state which is regarded as the industrial hub of the nation.

“We do not want criminals to cause problems for us. The state hosts a lot of companies and industries. It will not augur well to hear that criminality is prevalent in our state.

“I have asked that those who were caught in the recent kidnappings in the state be brought to me. I will warn them because government will not spare anyone caught in kidnapping henceforth,” he said.
