All in my generation, why?

- By Ukasha Rabiu

Whenever I pick my pen to write something about my generation, I feel very weak and annoyed, all as a result of poor and bad governance offered to my generation which is contrary to what we heard about when they were like us. l ask myself such a simple question that I think every young man and woman will ask, what have we done to them? And I surely know the answer is nothing. So, why the suffering? If it is not a retaliation arena why didn’t you respond so that we know our position or else we migrate to another nation so that we can have a conducive atmosphere to live.

To the best of my knowledge, Nigeria is our father land, we were born and brought up in the country so where did our leaders expect us to go? I think we have nowhere apart from our country Nigeria, meaning that we must stay and live in our country despite all odds, but the level and style of leadership is always discouraging.

Initially, let us look and observe the issues of education, which is the illumination platform of every successful nation on earth; looking at the sector here in Nigeria it is actually moribund, l mean the nitty gritty of what constitute the adjective good education are not there in Nigerian schools nowadays. Which is contrary to the promise they made when taking oath of office. And historically they haven’t undergone their own education in such a bad condition, they received free and qualitative education with a high standard motivation and conducive atmosphere irrespective of your status but in my generation only those that born with a silver spoon are enjoying that.

However, the issue of security is no longer an alarming issue though it is the constitutional duty of every government to protect the lives and property of its citizens, this fact makes me to disregard the Nigerian Constitution as a republic constitution anymore, the constitution that even the law makers have no respect of talk less of fulfilling the obligations written in the constitution.

But the security structure is unlike before. Issues of insurgency in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe. Farmers and herdsmen clash in Taraba, Benue, Plateau and southern Kaduna. Kidnapping in Abuja , Nasarawa, Kogi, Oyo, Lagos, Bayelsa, Kaduna and Kano. Armed banditry in Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and Niger. Haba!!! Why all in my generation? And I learnt all these didn’t happen in their time. They enjoyed a very peaceful and orderly environment.

More so, infrastructure and unemployment issues are my generation rather we are just political thugs and roughnecks to the politicians even though we are called the “backbone of the society “but in contemporary Nigeria we are not since we are not involved in both the political and governance affairs of the country. But during their time, they were allowed and also giving the room to participate. If I could recall General Muhammadu Buhari ruled this country at the age of 36 , General Gowon at the age 32, why not for my generation? Even with the socalled bill “Not Too Young To Run” we are not been given the opportunity though we are capable of holding the government offices. To this end, I contradict today’s leaders as being patriotic.

However, even if you think we are not capable of holding the offices why can’t you lead us just for tomorrow, so that the sky is our limit.

Believe me you were treated kindly if not you wouldn’t have reached the level you are now, and the most painful thing is that the faces of yesteryears are the faces of today and that of tomorrow in the Nigerian political terrain, there are no new faces in the Nigerian political train.

To this note, I can say Nigerian is practicing a monarchical system of government, it is no longer a democracy because the system is inherent in that it is from one circle of family to the other, the faces of 1960’s are the faces of today, then where is the democracy? And when will my generation have a rest of mind and be partaken in governance of affairs?

Frankly, speaking my generation have become victims of circumstance though we don’t know our fault that we are being treating like this, even with the slogan children are leaders of today and ambassador of tomorrow enough is enough at least have pity for my generation, yours will no longer last again. Then who will take over in your absence if we are not involved in or trained about the system. The younger one’s comfortability should be your priority just for the upcoming generation and for a better Nigeria.
