Stakeholders call for effective plastic waste mgt
Participants at the recent CEO Roundtable on Sustainability in Lagos have said that Nigeria stands a good chance of bending the curve in good time if the private and public sectors collaborate strategically.
Aside policy making, the panel recommended strategic timelines for executing each step of the national plan on circular economy.
The CEO Roundtable on Sustainability is a yearly event organized by the Lagos Business School to generate debate and chart a course for economic development through initiatives.
Commenting on the impact of plastic waste pollution on businesses and the society, the Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria PLC, Mr. Baker Magunda, in his convener’s remarks, stated that the focus should be on achieving zero-waste as well as cleaner growth targets.
“When we reduce plastic waste pollution, we would be addressing the issue of nondegradable waste, to which plastic wastes contribute immensely,” Magunda stated.
In addition to creating awareness among sustainable Nigerians, the guest speaker, Mrs. Folashade Morgan, chairperson, Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), advocated for intense and purposeful environmental literacy programmes to be championed by government, in collaboration with the organised private sector.
The Senior Technical Adviser, Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Dr. Bala Yusuf Yunusa, said the government is committed to working with the organized private sector to achieve an effective plastic waste management regime.
