Model Junior Sec School wins KCCN/UBEB taekwondo championsh­ip

Model Junior Secondary School, Maitama, has emerged winner of the second edition of Korea Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN) and Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB)’s elementary school taekwondo championsh­ip.

The event, which took place at Model Secondary School, Maitama on Saturday, saw over 80 students from four Abuja schools competing for honours.

Model Junior Secondary School, Maitama came top after bagging five gold medals and three silver medals while LEA Primary School, Wuse 5 zone 1 came close second with same number of gold medals but with just two silver medals.

The third and fourth positions were taken by LEA Primary School, Wuse zone 3 and Model Primary School, Maitama respective­ly.

Meanwhile, Destiny Chukwukere from LEA Primary School, Wuse zone 3 emerged as the best in the male category.

In the female category, 13-year-old Oluchi Madu came top. The athlete, who started taekwondo training in 2018, told Daily Trust that she was working towards representi­ng Nigeria in the Olympics in no distant time.

Speaking after the championsh­ip, the head coach of KCCN, Coach Abdulmalik Mohammed, said the best athletes at the championsh­ip will be selected to represent FCT at the next National school Games.

Earlier, the Director of KCCN, Lee Jin-Su said he was impressed that more Nigerians were taking to taekwondo.

While thanking SUBEB for keying into the programme, he promised that KCCN will continue to support Nigeria to ensure that the sport become more developed in the country.
