- From Ibraheem Hamza Muhammad, Lafia

The people of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have pledged their commitment to addressing the drug problem prevalent in the area.

Karu Local Government Chairman Samuel Gajere Alkala, who spoke at the this year’s World Mental Health Day last week at the local government secretariat, said the council authorities, traditional rulers, religious bodies, women and youth of the local government have united to end the menace of drug abuse and consumption.

He appealed to all to ensure and sustain synergy between all stakeholders in the effort to clear the community of drugs and related matters.

“Health comes first and peace should not be taken for granted as the youths are becoming truants. I call on them to avoid drugs and be good members of the society,” he said.

The Nasarawa State Commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Okey Justice Arinze said, “Karu has been referred to as the headquarters of drugs.

“We have arrested and prosecuted many drug dealers who sell cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, weed, and cough syrup. The problem of drug abuse is now rampant among ladies which is worrisome.

“We are now united with other security agencies and stakeholders to change the Karu narrative from the headquarters of drugs to that of peace,” he added

The Esu Karu, Pharmacist Luka Panya Baba, who was represented by Chief Joshua Madaki, advised law abiding residents not to confront criminals and cult groups but to quickly report to the relevant security agencies who are equal to the task of ensuring peace in the local government.
