Buhari celebrates nephew, Mamman Daura, at 80

- Abuja NASFAT distribute­s N1.1m zakat, sadaqat

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitate­d with his Nephew and long time friend, Alhaji Mamman Daura, on his 80th birthday, congratula­ting him for many years of love and sacrifices for the nation, especially in his chosen career, journalism.

In a statement yesterday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari joined all family members and friends of the veteran journalist in celebratin­g the milestone.

Buhari recalled, with delight, Daura’s remarkable brilliance from childhood at the Katsina Middle School and Government College which caught the attention of the Northern Regional Government.

According to him, this feat earned him sponsorshi­p for further studies in the United

Kingdom in the 50’s and many years to follow, noting that the knowledge had, overtime, only translated into more wisdom.

Buhari rejoiced with the renowned journalist and bibliophil­e, who worked with the civil service for a while before joining the New Nigerian newspapers, where he rose to be Editor and Managing Director, before venturing to the private sector as entreprene­ur.

He noted that Daura had inspired industrial growth in the north in furniture making, textile manufactur­ing, aluminium smelting and other investment­s.

He assured Daura that his footprint on the developmen­t of the country, and quintessen­tial attention to family values, would always be remembered and appreciate­d.

The Nasrul-Lahi- Fatih Society of Nigeria’s Agency for Zakat and Sadaqat, FCT chapter, has donated cash and empowermen­t materials worth N1.164 million in Abuja.

The chairman of the society’s Finance Committee, Alhaji Kelani, disclosed this at the NASFAT mosque, Utako, Abuja, yesterday at the second zakat and sadaqat disburseme­nt for the year.

He said there were 16 beneficiar­ies categorise­d into three--health purposes (cash), educationa­l needs (cash) and empowermen­t (sewing machines, deep freezers and cameras).

Kelani said N849,000 was spent on empowermen­t; while N224,000 on medical expenses and N90,000 on school fees.

Earlier, the chairman of the agency, Alhaji Isiaq Ajibola, said it was set up to collect, distribute and manage zakat

He also extolled him for the visionary role he played in the banking sector and management of companies, and developmen­t institutio­ns.

Buhari prayed that the Almighty God will grant longer life to the elder statesman, and more strength to keep pursuing his number one passion of serving humanity, especially through philanthro­py.(NAN) and sadaqat for Muslims, both NASFAT members and nonmembers.

Ajibola noted that even at the head office in Lagos, majority of those contributi­ng to the NAZAS Funds are non-members of NASFAT.

He the headquarte­rs had so far disbursed about N250m since 2014.

He said “the agency would embark on sensitizat­ion tour across the different branches in the zone to make ourselves known as much as possible so that Muslims can continue to trust us as a credible platform for paying their zakat and sadaqat,” he added.

Chairman, Board of Trustees of the society, Alhaji Abdullatif Olasupo implored the beneficiar­ies to make judicious use of the resources to elevate their economic situations, praying that in the coming year, they would also be in a position to pay zakat and sadaqat.
